Before coming to Elliot Oliver I was in hospitality for nine years. I started work at a hotel after my A levels and worked my way up to senior supervisor there. Now I’m a property manager at Elliot Oliver and in many ways it’s very similar – each hotel room is a mini property and I have to make sure each one’s running smoothly!
Throughout my career I’ve always tried to get as much experience as possible and it used to be me asking questions, but by the end of my time in hospitality I realised I was answering them! This was when I realised it was time for a change and when a friend told me about the property manager role at Elliot Oliver I saw a great opportunity and took it.
My experience in hospitality certainly helps me in my property manager role because it’s not just similar, it also needs the same people skills. You need to be very empathetic – to both tenant and landlord – and you need to be highly organised and always thinking ahead. I have more than 200 properties to look after so you’re always planning!
I’m a Cheltenham native and I bought a house in the town recently so I’ve got first hand experience of the property market. Sales is interesting, but I’m happy on the lettings side. My ideal tenancy would be a huge converted barn as I think they’re amazing and I’d let it to David Attenborough so he could point out all the wildlife to me!
One of the best things about changing careers is that I now have more spare time to pursue my hobbies. I’m quite arty and love to paint and draw, as well as to read a lot. When I’m not working or being creative, I’m a real pub girl and my favourite Cheltenham haunts include the Bath Road pubs, as well as the Somerset Arms and the Beehive, where I do a lot of my socialising.
