Come to Cheltenham for the Architecture, Stay for the Great Broadband

You might think you’re taking a step back in time by moving to Cheltenham, with its splendid Georgian architecture and the quaint English villages around it, but you’ll be pleased to know that the town’s broadband is thoroughly modern.

Here’s what the experts at Fair Internet Report have to say about the internet provision in Cheltenham.

Great average speeds

After looking at almost 28,000 speed test records, Fair Internet Report found that Cheltenham had a median speed of 64Mbps throughout 2022 so far. This is 11Mbps above the UK national average of 53Mbps and 23Mbps above the South West’s median speed of 41Mbps. It’s also a huge improvement on the town’s media speed of 20.05Mbps in 2018.

Gigabit internet access is poor

So far, only 2.16% of Cheltenham households have access to Gigabit and the build out of Gigabit is quite slow compared to Gloucester’s. Gloucester increased its Gigabit provision by 3.44% in the last 12 months, whereas Cheltenham is lagging behind on a 1.16% increase. Thankfully, the significantly above-average median speeds will keep Cheltenham residents happy until the town catches up.

The cost of internet in Cheltenham is below average

If there’s one below-average result that makes people happy, it’s a below-average price and thankfully, Cheltenham is happy to oblige when it comes to the cost of internet services. The average cost per Mbps download in Cheltenham is 31 pence, compared to the UK average cost of 50 pence per Mbps.

Cheltenham’s internet is great for working from home

Not only is the cost of internet services in Cheltenham handy for people working from home, the median upload speeds are great too. The town has a median upload speed of 13.99Mbps, which is almost 2Mbps above the national average of 12.19Mbps. The benchmark or threshold for upload speeds for working from home is considered to be 6Mbps, so Cheltenham is more than twice as fast, which is reassuring for employers and workers alike.
