Your First Month in Your New Home – What to Expect

Making Your New Property Your Home

Moving into a new home, especially if it’s in a new area, is an exciting process. It’s a fresh start, with maybe a new job and new friends, as well as new places to explore.

All that newness can feel a bit overwhelming, however, as you’re also dealing with the nuts and bolts of moving such as unpacking and sorting out your broadband provider.

To help you along, we have some handy tips for your first month in your new place.

Your first week is for nesting

Your first week will be all about unpacking and getting your essentials – with a few comforts here and there – set up. You need to arrange your furniture, your bedding, toiletries and children’s or pets’ spaces set up, as well as decide where everything is going to go.

The first week is also the time to get to know your new home – how the heating works, which rooms have the best mobile reception and which floorboard creaks when you walk on it.

Your second week is for exploring

Once you’ve got your home in some kind of order, it’s time to explore your neighbourhood and introduce yourself to people. Find your local grocery shop, the local park and check out all the other amenities.

If you’ve just moved to Cheltenham you may well be in time for one of the town’s many festivals, so look at events calendars and noticeboards.

Your third week is a bit more personal

You’ve sorted the essentials in your home, made friends with your neighbours and found one of Cheltenham’s great dog-walking spots, so now it’s time for the finishing touches at home.

You might have bought some new artwork for the move, so decide where you want it to go and put it up. You should also think about where you want all your familiar photos, books and cushions to go.

If you have any remodelling or redecorating plans, it’s time to think about these and to start planning, even if you won’t be starting them just yet.

The fourth week is for sorting out niggles

Once you’ve been in a new place for a few weeks, you’ll see leaky taps, drafty windows and scuffs on the skirting boards, so create a to-do list and spend some time fixing these minor issues.
